Positive impact made by staff recognised at Excellency Awards
Seamus Reid from Reid Black Solicitors presents the Staff Volunteer of the Year Award to Professor Allen Thurston (R)
The positive impact Queen’s staff and students make through volunteering activities has been recognised at the Volunteering Excellency Awards.
Organised by Queen’s Students’ Union and sponsored by Reid Black Solicitors, the black tie event celebrated the contribution that volunteers make both locally and internationally.
Among the award winners was Professor Allen Thurston from the School of Education who was named Staff Volunteer of the Year for his 30 years volunteering in mountain rescue, his assistance in over 200 mountain rescues and his commitment to The North West Mountain Rescue Team (NWMRT).
Other staff award winners on the night were Professors Paul Harkin and Richard Kennedy from the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology. They won the Queen’s Improvement to Society Accolade for their role in a £4.4m three year initiative to develop more effective tests for treatment of certain forms of cancer.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Tony Gallagher said: "The Students' Union Volunteering Excellency Awards has showcased the great work that
both students and staff of Queen's have contributed to both the local community and further afield. Congratulations to all winners and nominees. This event is just a small token of appreciation of their commitment, selflessness and passion."
