Dr Tess Maginess has been awarded a National Teaching Fellowship
Dr Tess Maginess from the School of Education has been awarded a National Teaching Fellowship, the most prestigious award for excellence in higher education teaching and support for learning.
A Senior Teaching Fellow and Director of Undergraduate Programmes in the School, Dr Maginess is one of 55 higher education staff to receive a Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy (HEA).
The successful National Teaching Fellows (NTFs) were chosen from over 180 nominations submitted by higher education institutions across England, Northern Ireland and Wales. Each will receive an award of £10,000 which will be used to support their professional development in teaching and learning or aspects of pedagogy.
Tess joined Queen’s in 1995 and was later appointed as Senior Teaching Fellow, responsible for the leadership of the adult education Open Learning Programme. Now, as Director of Undergraduate Programmes in the School of Education, she designs new BA modules, teaches and also co-ordinates undergraduate provision in the School.
Dr Maginess said: “'I am just delighted to be offered this great honour and I am very grateful to my Head of School Professor Paul Connolly and Professor Ellen Douglas-Cowie and to my colleagues in the School of Education for their warm support, to Liz McDowell and Linda Carey for their endless patience and to my students, without whose inspiration it would not have been at all possible."
Professor Craig Mahoney, Chief Executive of the HEA, said: "Becoming a National Teaching Fellow is a great honour and will undoubtedly lead to many new and exciting challenges, but I believe that it is students who will benefit most from these awards. Our students deserve the best possible learning experience and it is colleagues like those we celebrate who can make a real difference to their futures.”
The National Teaching Fellowship scheme is funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales, and the Department for Employment and Learning in Northern Ireland, and is open to staff whose teaching or support roles enhance the student learning experience at institutions in England, Northern Ireland and Wales.
