Rugby appointment for historian

Dr Olwen Purdue from the School of History and Anthropology has been appointed historial consultant to the new museum and education facility being developed as part of Ulster Rugby’s new stadium complex at Ravenhill

A Queen’s historian has been invited to act as consultant for an exciting new museum and education facility being developed as part of Ulster Rugby’s new stadium complex at Ravenhill.

Dr Olwen Purdue from the School of History and Anthropology will be involved in developing the facility which hopes to use collections and archives to explore the social history of rugby and the development of the sport in Ulster from its introduction in the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. It will also have a strong educational role, delivering learning content aligned to school curriculums.

Olwen said: “My role will be to provide guidance in terms of structure, themes and content and also to look at ways of developing the potential of the facility for educational and academic purposes.”

Olwen has experience in this area having acted as historical consultant for Titanic Belfast. She was also actively involved in introducing Queen’s students to the work of the museums and heritage sectors through a Public History Internship module which she delivered as part of the MA in History.  As a result of the success of this module, Olwen received a Queen's Teaching Award this year.
