Long-term declines in the Irish hare (Lepus timidus hibernicus) are primarily associated with agricultural intensification and farming practises such as the move from hay making to silage harvest.

The Irish hare is one of the highest priority species for conservation action in Northern Ireland and is subject to both an Northern Ireland and All-Ireland Species Action Plan which aim to:

  1. Maintain the existing range of Irish hares in Ireland
  2. Demonstrate a population increase by 2010
  3. Maintain and increase the area and quality of suitable hare habitat

To this end a leaflet was produced in collaboration with the Ulster Wildlife Trust (UWT) and Biodiversity Unit (NIEA) to inform farmers of the conservation issues surrounding the Irish hare and make recommendations for best practise when farming in areas where hares are known to occur.
