Name: Kathryn A. Forsythe-Majchrzak
Job: Senior GIS Analyst,
Subjects taken - BSc Geography
How would you describe a typical day in your current job?
I do everything from Map Creation to GIS Analysis for Land Use Historical Development and Future Development to design of GIS geodatabases and development of customized GIS user interfaces to extracting data for use in the CAD environment, as well as training staff less familiar with the technology.
What made you decide to study your degree subject at university?
I enjoyed geography throughout High School where I had a teacher who was passionate about the subject, made it fun to learn and instilled that same passion in me.
What attracted you to your current job?
In my final 2 years at Queen's I was able to study GIS (Geographical Information Systems) which was a new and developing technology. With that in mind, I knew I wanted to pursue GIS as my career. My current job lets me work in all aspects of GIS in a company that respects and recognises the valuable technology that GIS has come to offer.
What aspects do you find most satisfying about your current job?
Being able to deliver data to co-workers and clients quickly and efficiently. Having the opportunity to troubleshoot GIS data issues. Using the tools that I've taught myself over the past 16 years.
How did your time at Queen's equip you with the personal and professional skills for your chosen career?
Queen's taught me how to work in a team environment and also taught me how to research information. University also taught me how important it is to network within your existing social networks and how to ask questions to further your knowledge. Remember there is no such thing as a "dumb" question.
