Cancer Focus Northern Ireland

Kelly Redmond - Cancer Focus Case Study

Queen’s Biomedical Sciences graduate Kelly Redmond carried out a research project on behalf of the Ulster Cancer Foundation (now Cancer Focus NI), to pinpoint which areas of Northern Ireland have the highest incidence of melanoma skin cancers.

Kelly compared trends across all council areas over a 19 year period from 1984-2002. She also compared the Northern Ireland statistics with those from other countries.

Kely said: “I enjoyed the project very much, and it was hugely rewarding to know that it was used by the Ulster Cancer Foundation in their review of their Cancer Awareness Strategy.” The project also confirmed Kelly’s interest in working in the field of cancer research, in which she went on to complete a PhD in this area.  She is currently a researcher at the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology in Queen's.
