The 'Reproductive and Sexual Health of Children and Young People' special interest group will be holding a public lecture on 14 October. The speaker is Dr Katie Buston, Senior Investigator Scientist, Sexual Health and Families Programme at the Medical Research Council and Chief Medical Officer Scotland, Social and Public Health Sciences Unit, Glasgow, and the respondent is Mr Gary Alcock, Governor of Hydebank (young offenders centre and prison, Northern Ireland).

'The Vulnerable Subject: Anchoring Equality in the Human Subject'

'Growing Up in Divided Societies' Conference
10th - 11th June 2010
The conference ‘Growing up in Divided Societies’ will be held from 10th – 11th June 2010. The conference is co-organised by Madeleine Leonard (convenor of the Special Interest Group on Children and Political Conflict) and Spyros Syprou, the Director of the International Childhood and Youth Research Network at European University in Cyprus.
The conference aims to bring together scholars whose work focuses on the experiences of children growing up in divided societies.

Second Annual Multi Disciplinary Postgraduate Conference of the Research Forum for the Child

This year’s conference is exclusively for postgraduates at Queen’s University, Belfast. The Conference is an initiative of the Research Forum for the Child and seeks to promote high quality, multidisciplinary research that provides a greater understanding of the issues that affect children and young people. The theme of the conference is “Researching Children and Young People”. The aim of the conference is to provide an opportunity for postgraduates from all stages and all disciplines to present their work, receive feedback and network with other postgraduates with similar research interests in a constructive and encouraging atmosphere.

The role of children as researchers in contemporary society'

Professor Mary Kellett, Director of the Childhood and Youth Programme and Director of the Children's Research Centre at the Open University will be presenting a Child Forum seminar with the title 'It's our childhood, start with us! The role of children as researchers in contemporary society'. The seminar will take place on 30 March 2010 from 12.30pm to 2pm in Room G13 (Cathcart Room) in the School of Education, 69/71 University Street.

Una is a global, interdisciplinary network of leading researchers and practitioners committed to reducing racial and ethnic divisions and building socially inclusive communities through the promotion of effective early childhood programmes. Its work is characterized by a commitment to developing programmes that are children’s rights-based, outcomes focused and evidence-informed. This one-day seminar has been organized by the Children’s Rights and Advocacy Learning Group within Una and is being hosted by the Improving Children’s Lives initiative at Queen’s University Belfast.
The purpose of the seminar is to share international experiences and perspectives regarding the application of a children’s rights based approach to the planning, provision and evaluation of children’s services and to consider the implications of this for developing early childhood programmes aimed at promoting respect for ethnic diversity.

'The Language of Resistance: Palestinian Children Constructing the Work JIHAD'
Seminar by Prof Janette Habashi

Janette Habashi is an assistant professor in the Department of Human Relations, University of Oklahoma. In 2004, she completed her Ph.D in Educational Psychology from Kent State University, Ohio, USA. Recent publications include Creating Indigenous Discourse: History, Power and Imperialism in Academia, Palestinian Case, (Qualitative Inquiry, 2005), Palestinian Children Crafting National Identity, (Childhood, 2008), Political Language of Socialization: Language of Resistance, (Children's Geographies, 2008). Most recently, Habashi collaborated with Jody Worley on a publication titled Child geopolitical agency: A mixed method case study. (Journal of Mixed Method Research, 2008). In 2005, she was awarded the Rockefeller Fellowship in the Anthropology Department of Johns Hopkins University. She is also invited to work on an international research project contributing to Living Rights of children in IUKB, Sion (Switzerland). Also, she was selected as a member of The Joint Learning Initiative on Children and Ethnic Diversity (JLICED) an international project. Habashi's research interest examines indigenous and children's voices in different locals.

Discussion of the proposed Bill of Rights in N.I. and its impact on children and young people

As you may be aware, the Northern Ireland Office is currently consulting on a proposed Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland. The Research Forum for the Child is holding a lunchtime discussion event on Thursday 18 February, 12.30-2.00pm to discuss the impact of the NIO proposals on children and young people in Northern Ireland and how we can respond.
