Coordinator: Dr Maria Lohan

This Special Interest Group brings together researchers across the disciplines of Nursing and Midwifery, Medicine, Sociology, Social Policy and Social Work, Law and Performing Arts in QUB in order our extend our work on sexual and reproductive health relating to children and young people. Currently the research interests of the members encompasses three main topics.: The first  topic relates to research in relation to children and young people’s sexual and reproductive health and includes projects such as Sex education amongst children and young people; Adolescent pregnancy and parenting; Teenage men and pregnancy, and fatherhood experiences of young offenders (see selected research projects).

The second topic relates to research on caring for the parents of children and young people, especially in relation to their sexual and reproductive healthcare needs. This includes research on infertility health care, pregnancy experiences of HIV Positive men and women, and pregnancy and parenting amongst ‘high-risk’ groups (see selected research projects).

Finally, the, Special Interest Group seeks to have a broad interpretation of health and wellbeing and includes researchers interested in expanding knowledge of contemporary gender identities and change and continuity in sexual and reproductive identities of young people (see selected research projects).

The Special Interest Group is keen to develop partnerships between research and policy and practice by actively fostering links with key stakeholders working in sexual and reproductive health. To this end, our membership is open to individuals external to QUB. We aim to develop further our links with key organisations such as the Family Planning Association, Brook, Crisis Pregnancy Agency, Teenage Pregnancy Unit, Youth Conference, Department of Health, Social Services & Public Safety for Northern Ireland and Public Health Agency. If you work in such a key stakeholder organisation and would like to get involved in the research meetings of the Special Interest group, please contact the convenor: Maria Lohan (m.lohan@qub.ac.uk).
