We want to use this page as a resource for visual material on ethno-national conflicts in contested cities. Here you can find some of our own Conflict in Cities Research Project images. You are welcome to use our images for teaching and presentation purposes (provided copyright is acknowledged: © Conflict in Cities).
If you are interested in attending/contributing to the Urban Conflicts Conference and have images from the city/cities you have been working on why not send them to us? You will need to be the author of the photograph/image or to have the copyright to use it. Please include a caption and a brief explanation of the significance of the image. We will publish it online and your authorship/copyright will be acknowledged. Images can be emailed to Dr. Milena Komarova.
The Bulevar, Mostar
This is a picture of the Bulevar in Mostar - a former frontline and still the main dividing line between Croats and Muslims in the city. The photo was taken by one of our Conflict in Cities PhD students - Giulia Carabelli. Giulia's research addresses the process of post-war reconstruction of Mostar at a normative and legislative level (urban planning), and from the point of view of how people living in the new Mostar experience and understand the city in everyday life.
Nahr el Bared Camp, Lebanon
A demonstration in the Nahr el Bared Camp, Lebanon. The image was taken by Monika Halkort - a Conflict in Cities PhD student. It shows inhabitants of the Camp flying the Turkish flag in protest against the Israeli attack on a Turkish ship attempting to bring goods to Gaza (30 May, 2010). Monika's research investigates the political and spatial economy of conflict cities based on a case study of Tripoli, North Lebanon.

Another picture by Monika showing ruins from the Nahr el Bared Palestinian refugee camp.
A school, Brussels
Photo by Karl O'Connor, a Conflict in Cities PhD student. The image shows a music school in Brussels. Karl, who is doing his research on the contribution of the bureaucracy to normalisation and stabilisation within the contested urban environments of Brussels, Nicosia and Beirut, explains: if one looks closely the signs on either side above the school's main entrance are in French (left) and Dutch (right). Both French and Dutch-speaking students use the building but are kept apart within it.
School display, Enghien, Belgium
Another picture taken by Karl O'Connor showing a display on the wall of a school in the border town of Enghien, Belgium.
Bonfire stack, Belfast
The image shows a carefully arranged stack ready for the 11th night bonfire in Belfast. Bonfires are lit on the night before July 12th in many unionist and loyalist communities in Northern Ireland to commemorate the Battle of Boyne (12 July 1690). The Irish flag can be seen on top of this stack, behind a lamp post. Picture © Donna Worby.
Easter Day commemoration, Milltown Cemetery, Befast
This photograph was taken by Brendan Browne, another Conflict in Cities doctoral research student. Brendan's research compares the commemoration of Nakba Day in Ramallah and Easter Uprising commemoration in West Belfast.
