Postgraduate Students

Mr. Luís Filipe Tavares Portela Vasques Varandas graduated with a Second Upper-class honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Porto in July of 2016. He studied Structural and Machine Design focussing on Machine Dynamics, Lubrication and Contact Mechanisms, Fracture Mechanics and Fatigue, and the Finite Element Method. His thesis involved a detailed investigation of interlaminar failure in uni- and multidirectional composites through the generation of micromechanical three dimensional computational models. In September 2016, he became an active research fellow at INEGI (Instituto de Ciência e Inovação em Engenharia Mecânica e Engenharia Industrial) on a project called PASSARO, with Airbus as its main industrial sponsor. The main objective of this work was the exploration and development of advanced add-on solutions for a cockpit against high velocity impacts. He joined the ACRG at Queen’s University Belfast in March 2017 as a PhD student and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Early Stage Researcher as part of the ICONIC project. His research is currently focussed on the understanding how damage mechanisms evolve in different types of composite materials at different length scales.
