The methodology

The project follows a practice-based research methodology.

This seeks to contribute to the production and dissemination of a documentary film production as a tool of knowledge transfer. Historian Fearghal McGarry works with film academic Desmond Bell to develop the programme concept and script based on his historical research. The academic team, in turn, will collaborate closely with Belfast-based film and television production company Glass Machine Productions which has an established track record of producing films on historical themes for Irish and British television (BBC, Channel 4, RTE, UTV, TG4). The production will be a fully professional one, largely funded from the participating broadcaster TG4 and Northern Ireland Screen, with support from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.

The academic team will work closely with the production company, broadcaster and a range of film festivals to facilitate a range of screenings and workshops through which audience feedback can be encouraged to facilitate the effectiveness of the film as a communicational tool and its impact via broadcast and other modes of exhibition. A dedicated website will provide an additional range of interpretative resources (additional historical information, production notes, a forum for public debate) to accompany the exhibition of the film.
