This programme is normally restricted to researchers registered within the Universities which host the programme (Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin and Queen’s University, Belfast). By special agreement with the Innovation Academy’s Directors, all ICONIC ESRs will be invited to take the course. The programme is delivered by academic staff drawn from diverse disciplines, who are active in the area of innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as senior advisors and practitioners in public and private sector organisations. There is an emphasis on workshops and problem-based learning within multidisciplinary teams and the course provides an additional qualification to registered PhD students. The Postgraduate Certificate has a flexible structure, comprising two core modules and three specialised modules, which can be taken on a flexible schedule throughout the academic year. Students take part in workshops, seminars, practical challenges, design thinking and innovation projects. There is an intensive, experiential programme with the aim of introducing students to creative thinking within teams and the basic concepts of entrepreneurship. ULIM Graduate Certificate in Research Skills: ESRs will choose from the following:

Programme delivered through a blended learning model, with one week resident learning at ULIM. The ESRs will then work over the remainder of the summer (back at their host institute) by carrying out on-line assignments, monitored remotely by ULIM tutors.

Summer Schools

Summer School 1

Month

Developing and characterising novel composite materials for structural applications

-          Technical training programme: QUB, DLR, UPAT and UU will give an overview of (i) methodologies for developing novel materials of particular relevance to ICONIC (ii) the tools available for the material characterisation at the micro and meso-scales; e.g. SEM/TEM microscopy, fractography, DSC, TGA, DMA, FTIP, AFM (iii) materials testing, e.g. using Universal Testing Machines, Drop towers, SHB and the use of standards. Visiting Scientists will be invited by the ISG to deliver seminars on material characterisation.

-          Partner Organisations: AW, CCPG and AXIS will provide an industrial perspective on current needs which are best served by the themes addressed in this Summer School.

-          Transferable skills programme: A career development workshop will be held which will emphasise skills for improving employability and professional mobility. Recruitment personnel from participant HR divisions (including the private sector) will be invited to explain selection processes by which staff are appointed within their organisations.

-          Open Science – presentations to equip ESRs with the skills to function effectively in an open access, gender sensitive research environment.

-          Potential dual use applications – ESRs will be obliged to attend a workshop where they will be made aware of the risks in the use of their research for military applications and presented with risk mitigation strategies.

-          Public Engagement: Lectures for school children and the public.

Month

Virtual testing and design of composite structures

-          Technical training programme: QUB, SICOMP, ULIM, POLITO will deliver seminars on practical aspects of using computational methods reliably and will also present current research in the high fidelity modelling, virtual testing and design of composite structures. BAB will host a site visit and give an overview of the use of modelling within an industrial context and where the company sees the need for improvement and further development in the technology. Two Visiting Scientists who are at the forefront of research and innovation in this field will be invited to present seminars.

-          Partner Organisations: DS will present the latest developments of their widely used software and conduct workshops for ESRs. BAB and AW will discuss the tools they currently use and perceived needs.

-          Transferable skills programme: The UKs Science Media Centre will host a half-day event titled ‘Introduction to the News Media’ to explain to ECRs how best to engage with the media in promoting their research and providing expert opinion. General workshops on improving communication skills will also be conducted. A Gender Innovations Workshop will also be held.

Design and optimisation of composite structures

-          Technical training programme: This summer school will be particularly industry-focussed where BAB, SICOMP, ULIM, CRF and UU will give ESRs practical knowledge of composite design and the implementation of optimisation tools. Two distinguished scientists in the field of optimisation will be invited.

-          Partner Organisations: DS will host workshops for ESRs on the use of optimisation tools and simulating lifecycle management. CRF will present on the design methodologies being used in the development of road vehicles.

-          Transferable skills programme: ESRs will learn about IPR, technology transfer, commercialisation and creating a new business from practitioners in the respective fields, including ICONIC industrial participants. The invited speakers will be brought together as a panel for a Q & A session with the ESRs.

-          Public Engagement: Public lectures and technology demonstrations.

International ICONIC conference

-          ESRs will be actively involved in the planning and organising of this conference.

-          Each ESR will give a presentation of their projects, outlining research results and the exploitable technology produced.

-          Invitations will be extended to external delegates from academia, research institutes and industry.

-          Speakers invited to deliver keynote lectures (names to be confirmed).

-          An exhibition space will give ESRs additional opportunity to showcase their work through posters, the exhibiting of representative specimens and computational simulations.

-          Non-academic participants will share this exhibition space to exhibit technologies which have benefited from their involvement in ICONIC.

-          Expected number of delegates: approximately 80, including all ESRs, supervisors and mentors.
