ILM Certificate

If you are interested in completing the ILM Certificate, please read this section.

What is the ILM?

The Institute of Leadership and Management is the UK's largest awarding body for leadership and management qualifications. They partner with over 2,000 ILM-approved centres, comprising private training providers, further and higher education colleges, and employers delivering in-house management training.

What is the Certificate Level 5 in Leadership and Management

The Certificate is an accredited award which recognises that learners have undergone personal and professional development which has been accredited both internally and externally.  The Level 5 qualification is primarily designed for project managers, department heads, and other practising middle managers. The ILM have agreed to provide this level of accreditation to Postgraduate Research Students due to the commitment to training and development that exists within PhD programmes within Higher Education environments.

What are the benefits of having a Certificate level 5 in Leadership and Management?

  • The Certificate enables students to evidence participation in training and development activities, to a national standard.
  • Although all Universities provide training and development opportunities to PhD students, Queen’s University is the first to link this to an externally accredited award.
  • Leadership and Management skills are increasingly being recognised as critical within all organisational settings. Within higher education institutions, leadership and management skills are now recognised as a vital component of academic roles.
  • The process of achieving the award enables clarification of strengths and development areas and increases self-awareness for the future.

What is the structure of the award?

The award contains three units as below:

Unit 1 – Managing own continuing professional development

Unit 2 – Making Professional Presentations

Unit 3 – Becoming An Effective Leader

In relation to each unit, students are required to participate in a range of training and development interventions leading to the completion of a 2,500-3,000 word assignment. The training interventions are those already existing on the Postgraduate Researcher Development Programme and it is the intention of the award to link activity as closely as possible to the requirements of the PRDP.

How do I find out more about the award?

There will be an information session held in the Postgraduate Centre in the coming months. An email invitation will be sent to all students in advance. If you have any immediate questions please contact Heather McGregor (h.mcgregor@qub.acuk).
