1.2.1 Professional training programme, Chongqing Municipal Commission of Urban-Rural Development (2011)

From 18 November – 07 December 2011, QUB organised and ran an extensive training programme for a delegation of 25 senior construction professionals from the municipality of Chongqing, China. Led by the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Urban-Rural Development, the remit of the programme combined technology transfer and business development. Involving contributions from leading organisations, companies and universities in the UK and Ireland, the training programme provided review UK best practice in the area of sustainable construction and opportunities for integrating key solutions and principles into the large-scale construction works ongoing and scheduled within the municipality of Chongqing. With a particular focus on residential developments, key areas covered included sustainable development and construction, industrialisation techniques in terms of design/construction, and related regulations, codes and planning issues. This 20-day training programme involved activities in Belfast and throughout Northern Ireland, Dublin, Edinburgh and London.

1.2.5 Staff and student exchange

  • Dr. Qun Niu from Shanghai University joined Queen’s University from Oct. 2009 to Feb. 2011 as postdoctoral researcher, and won several grants from National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and from Shanghai municipal governments after back to Shanghai university in 2011.
  • Dr. Dajun Du from Shanghai University joined Queen’s University from May. 2011 to Aug. 2012. Then he went back and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2012 and won a grant awarded by NSFC.
  • Prof. Shiji Song from Tsinghua University visited Queen’s University for collaborative research in Sep. 2009, funded by Royal Academy of Engineering Senior Visiting Professor scheme.
  • Prof. Shaoyuan Li from Shanghai Jiaotong University visited Queen’s for collaborative research in Aug. 2011, funded by Royal Academy of Engineering Senior Visiting Professorship scheme.
  • Prof Hailong Wang from Zhejiang University visited Queen’s University to work with Civil Engineering in 2009.
  • 11 Queen’s university Belfast undergraduates visited Tsinghua University, Chongqing University from July to August 2010, funded by the Prime Minister Initiative on Student Mobility.
  • Civil Engineering: 10 UK students went for Entrepreneurship training and field tests in China from July and August 2010.
