The Effective Researcher (2 day course)

Event Description

Date:

29 - 30 June 2016

Time:

9.15am - 5.00pm

Designed for:

This programme is aimed at early career staff researchers.

Content:

This course provides essential tools and skills for busy researchers.  The course covers:

  • project management - for your own projects, and in assisting others with their projects, including the creativity of developing new projects.
  • prioritisation of competing tasks and managing complex, diverse workloads.
  • people management - managing others and being managed.
  • communication about your research, your goals and yourself.
  • orientation within your longer-term career.

This is an intensive two-day programme that uses a series of experiential learning activities to explore the practical skills required for successful project management and the further development of intellectual independence.  Full attendance on both days is required as programme activities have been designed to integrate self-awareness and learning across key areas of project management and career development.  At this event Queen’s researchers will be joined by researchers from University College Dublin and Dublin City University.

Day 2 Wrap-up and course close

Dr Vivien Hodges was one of the participants.  She viewed the course as “challenging both on a personal and intellectual level but extremely rewarding in terms of identifying personal goals, providing a greater self-awareness of learning and working styles, clarifying career plans, recognising strengths (and weaknesses!) and overall left me determined to take control of my career.  The facilitators made sure there was a good mix of fun and serious activities and we finished by writing down a set of personal goals.  I could not recommend this course highly enough to all researchers, in particular for staff early in their career, to develop personal and practical skills required for effective job performance and career progression.”
