Affiliation with the Centre for Social Research

The Queen’s University of Belfast,

Northern Ireland

The Centre for Social Research [CSR] is located within the School of Social Sciences at the Queen’s University of Belfast, Northern Ireland.  The Centre services the social science research community in Northern Ireland in a number of ways, including acting as ‘home base’ for a number of ongoing research projects.  The Centre also runs a series of workshops, occasional conferences and seminars designed variously to convey information about new developments in research techniques and to act as a forum for academic debate and the presentation of ongoing research work.

It is now possible to affiliate with the Centre for Social Research.  Social scientists who live in Northern Ireland can locate themselves at the Centre.  Social scientists with an interest in Northern Ireland who are visiting the province for either a brief or extended period of time - perhaps on sabbatical or during fieldwork - also may be attached to the Centre.  CSR can provide some or all of the following for an Affiliate:

·      an institutional postal address and access to the University telephone system;

·      access to the Internet and e-mail facilities;

·      access to the University Library and its research and information retrieval systems;

·      financial servicing’ of a research grant through the University Bursar’s accounting system (this would require an overhead charge).

Successful applicants for affiliation would not normally be charged but in return they would be expected to contribute to the academic life of the Centre and the University and, where appropriate, to present seminars or write working papers.  These latter commitments would be agreed prior to affiliation. An Affiliate of the Centre for Social Research, for example, may make direct applications through the University for grants from research councils or foundations that require an institutional base in the United Kingdom.  This possibility may be especially attractive to senior colleagues who have retired or younger researchers who are not presently in a permanent post.

Initial expressions of interest should be made to the Head of the School of Sociology & Social Policy:
