Business Education
Initiative (BEI) |
The BEI offers a pre-final-year student
the opportunity to study for a year in the USA. A student is awarded
the 'University's Certificate in American Business Practice'
on successful completion of the BEI year. Successful completion
is defined as: |
- completing a year of study at an
approved college in the USA
- obtaining a grade point average
(GPA) of at least 3.0, and
- successfully completing a project
undertaken as part of the BEI study programme.
|
| The scheme attracts students from
a wide range of schools within QUB, including Aeronautical Engineering,
Biology & Biochemistry, Computer Science, English, Law, Management
& Economics, Mathematics & Physics, Politics, and Psychology.
Within QUB, the International Office manages the initiative. General
enquiries should be directed to Lorna Martin - Tel. 028 90274681

Certificate in
Career Management & Employability Skills ('Skills to
Succeed') |
This course is intended to provide students
with insight into the graduate labour market and to develop and
enhance their employability skills. Students develop an appreciation
of how to manage the graduate recruitment process, learn how to
be effective in the workplace and how to be active in future career
development. Topics include interactive sessions on areas such as
presentation skills, networking and negotiation, teamwork and assertiveness.
Candidates are required to complete three pieces of coursework
- a networking assignment, a reflective piece of writing and an
assessed presentation. These assignments contribute to a portfolio
of work to illustrate personal and skills development.
The course, targeted primarily at final-year students, lasts 12
weeks and there is a cost of £30 to cover materials. A University
Certificate is awarded to those who satisfactorily complete the
course.
The course attracts students from a wide range of schools within
QUB, including Biology & Biochemistry, Electrical & Electronic
Engineering, History, Law, Management & Economics, Mechanical
& Manufacturing Engineering, and Politics.

City & Guilds
Senior Awards |
QUB received delegated authority in
1994 to administer the City & Guilds Senior Awards Scheme. The
scheme is based on the recognition of competence and achievement
through a combination of education, training and employment, and
it provides a progressive, vocational route to high level qualifications.
The Senior Awards available through QUB are LICENTIATESHIP (LCGI),
GRADUATESHIP (GCGI) and MEMBERSHIP (MCGI). These are parallel to
undergraduate level, first degree and Master's degree level respectively.
In applying for the award all candidates provide a portfolio of
evidence to reflect the candidates' development and the knowledge,
experience and skills gained. QUB appoints a supervisor to guide
and support each candidate in the preparation of a portfolio of
evidence. QUB then assesses the portfolio and suitability of the
candidate, and makes recommendations to City & Guilds for the
award.
The licentiateship award attracts students following a wide range
of pathways, including Agricultural Economics & Management,
Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic
Engineering, Finance, Food Science & Technology, and Information
Technology.

An example of the award in practice: |
Students following the BSc in Finance have a compulsory placement
year. The assessment of placement incorporates both a performance
appraisal approach and a personal analysis of the knowledge and
employability skills acquired on placement. The recorded experience
qualifies the student for the City & Guilds Licentiateship.

European Computer
Driving Licence (ECDL) |
|
The ECDL is an internationally recognised
qualification that enables individuals to demonstrate their competence
in computer skills. QUB is an accredited centre for the ECDL.
The ECDL syllabus may be downloaded from: http://www.ecdl.com/main/syllabus.php
The ECDL is a process of assessing, rather than a course. Total
preparation and testing time for the ECDL is 140 hours for a complete
beginner; however, the majority of candidates complete in less time.
For £100 a student receives an ECDL logbook and is entitled
to take all seven tests, with one resit. QUB provides the testing
and students prepare for the tests by accessing the NETg computer-based
training materials accessible via the following link.
A candidate may take the tests over a three-year period.

An example of the award in practice: |
In 1999-2000, the ECDL was piloted with 25 Stage 1 Economics
students. In 2000-01, 15 students successfully completed the programme;
in 2001-02, 7 students successfully completed the programme.

the ECDL within a School, contact Mary
