Irish Legal History Archive

The Irish Legal History Society was established in 1988 at a meeting held in the Provost's House, Trinity College, Dublin in the presence of the Chief Justice of Ireland, The Hon Mr Justice Finlay, and the Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland, The Rt Hon Lord Lowry.

Under the continuing patronage of the two Chief Justices, the Society is supported by members thoughout Ireland and abroad, including members of the judiciary, practising lawyers, academic lawyers and historians... Any person with an interest in Irish legal history is cordially invited to apply for membership.

The Society's objective is to encourage the study and advance the knowledge of the history of Irish law, primarily through the publication of scholarly works based on original research and designed to be of value not only to the legal historian, but also, since Irish legal and political history are closely intertwined, to all those with an interest in general Irish history. Accordingly, its publications are an essential part of any library which aspires to cover Irish history.

In addition to its publishing programme, the Society supports research through its postgraduate research studentship, an annual bursary and occasional research grants. It is also instigating an oral history project and providing support for the Irish Legal History Archive being created in University College Dublin.

The Society's Annual Meeting is held every Autumn at different venues throughout Ireland.
