Engaging with policy makers on counter-terrorism law and policy: experiences and challenges of researching with Muslim communities

Reflecting on his recent research with Muslim civil society actors in Britain and Canada, and on the experiences of school and college staff in implementing the ‘Prevent Duty’ in England, lawyer and academic, Tufyal Choudhury, will discuss the challenges of undertaking research with communities, practitioners and policy makers in the area of counter-terrorism policies in the UK. Professor McEvoy will respond to Mr Choudhury’s talk with wider reflections on the relationship between counter-terrorism law and policy, human rights and the particular role of former politically motivated prisoners in challenging cultures of violence.

Speakers:   Tufyal Choudhury (Durham University) and Professor Kieran McEvoy (QUB)

The IDRG holds a series of interdisciplinary events and workshops across the academic year for PhD students across the university. It aims to bring together postgraduate research students from across disciplines to meet, discuss and share common research interests around issues of peace, conflict, security and justice.
