The Dr and Mrs Tyrrell Prize for Conflict Transformation and Social Justice

The Dr and Mrs Tyrrell Prize

The prize was funded through a pecuniary legacy gift of £1,000 from the will of Mr Tyrrell. Mr Tyrrell graduated from Queen’s University in 1973 with a BA degree in German with Swedish.

The prize is in memory of his late parents, and – as a one-off prize – Mr Tyrrell asked that it be awarded to a Masters student, who completes the best project focused on a conflict situation in the developing world. In December 2017, the Tyrrell Prize was awarded to Ms ANGELA NARBONA IRANZO (supervised by Dr Ulrike M Vieten) for her MA dissertation ‘Female ex-combatants and the Sierra Leonian Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration process (DDR)’.

Hear from our students

Paul Gallagher

Student, Belfast, Northern Ireland

This Master's has been a natural extension of where I have come from as a peacebuilder, as a victim of political violence, and as an advocate for victims. The core learning from the modules has added to my lived experience by expanding my knowledge around the theories and concepts of conflict transformation and social justice.

Nirmal Munir

International Student, Pakistan

Studying Conflict transformation taught me a lot about religious co-existence. I come from a country where religion is a bone of contention between various segments of society. I hope this subject will further enhance my knowledge and help me in bringing change in Pakistani society.

Aleksander H. Seymore

Mitchell Scholar, International Student, North Carolina, USA

I’m passionate about sports and how they can be used to help transform societies after a conflict. At the Institute, I’ll be able to study conflict transformation with world-class instructors in the classroom while working directly with peace-driven sports organisations to help solve a real-world conflict outside of it.

Yumi Omori

International Student, Tokyo, Japan

I participated in the summer school and it was a life-changing experience. I met people that I couldn’t access in Japan and while spending the whole summer inside the library. I am interested in the political attitude of young generations in post-conflict societies, and now I am back here at the Institute to further investigate the topic

Bronagh Bradley

Student, Belfast, Northern Ireland

Social justice is at the core of my political beliefs and the opportunity to further explore these as a post graduate appealed to me. Growing up in Belfast and having an interest in politics, I want to be part of the generation that brings about change to our post conflict society. The Institute provided an opportunity to combine my two passions.

Rachel Green

Mitchell Scholar, International Student, Germantown, USA

I chose this course because of its focus on interdisciplinarity and its comparative approach to conflict transformation and social justice. I’m interested in studying the role of women in social conflict in different countries – both their involvement in the conflict and the impact of the conflict on their well-being.
