Speakers:
Professor Robert Crews (Department of History, Stanford University) and Professor Michael Semple (Practitioner Chair, Mitchell Institute)

Series Convenor: Dr Zaheer Kazmi

Afghanistan has been a country riven by almost continuous war since 1978. Yet while seemingly ever-present as a site of global conflict and failed peace, the country and its people are often viewed in crude and simplistic ways. This event brings together two leading experts on the country to shed light on transformations in Afghanistan’s multifaceted politics, culture and society. How have they been shaped by war and what are their implications for peace?

Professor Robert Crews will talk about religious pluralism and diversification in Afghanistan tracing the ways war has given rise to new religious and political sensibilities.  Find out more information on Professor Robert Crews.

Professor Michael Semple will talk on current prospects for peace in the light of the evolving political culture of the Taliban.  Find out more information on Professor Michael Semple.

This event is FREE and is open to all QUB staff and students.

To book your place please RSVP to the Mitchell Institute at mitchell.institute@qub.ac.uk by noon on Friday 18 October.
