The Mitchell Institute is pleased to host this Research Workshop, focusing on Dr Peter McLoughlin's recent research.

The Workshop will be held in-person and will be chaired by Professor Richard English (QUB).

Places will be limited to 18 and must be booked in advance.

The format for the Workshop is that attendees are asked to read a recent article by Dr Peter McLoughlin. The article will be forwarded to attendees upon registration.

The Workshop will involve questions, debate and discussion based around the article. There will not be a talk by Dr McLoughlin, but people will instead move immediately to their questions:

  • about the article;
  • about how it relates to people's own work;
  • about the wider field and possible future research agendas within that field;
  • or about any responses people want to debate in relation to this important new publication.

Dr Peter McLoughlin

My research background is in Irish history and politics, with particular emphasis on British-Irish relations and the Northern Ireland problem. However, more recent work has drawn upon broader theories of ethnic conflict and conflict resolution, showing how these can be applied to Northern Ireland specifically. I have also conducted research on the role that external actors such as the EU and US government can play in conflict resolution.

More recently, I have begun to look at devolution as a means to accommodate national differences in the UK context, but also how the recent referendum on Scottish independence and proposed referendum on UK membership of the EU might affect such efforts.
