Student Offer: Worth £1,500
Financial Incentive to Find Alternative Accommodation or to Commute
In order to reduce the number of students who still need accommodation and help prioritise those most in need, we are launching a £1,500 financial offer to eligible students as an alternative to taking a room in Queen’s accommodation this incoming academic year.
Offer Eligibility and Next Steps
The financial incentive is worth £1,500 per student and is set out below.
- £1,250 cash
- Off Peak Sports Membership at Queen’s and
- £150 credit on your Queen’s student card to use towards printing / QFT / Food on campus.
This offer is open to:
- All eligible first year students from NI, GB, ROI who have applied to student accommodation at Queen’s in 2021-22 and who meet the criteria for guaranteed accommodation. (The guarantee requires Northern Ireland students to have applied for Queen’s accommodation by 5 August and Great Britain or Republic of Ireland students to have applied for Queen’s accommodation by 6 September 2021. In addition, all students must have enrolled and registered and be fee paying students at either Queen’s, Ulster University, Belfast Metropolitan, St Mary’s or Stranmillis College).
- Returning Queen’s students who have accepted an offer of a room in Queen’s Accommodation for the 2021-22 academic year.
Offer Deadline: 12 September
This offer is time bound and limited in the numbers we can offer. Please confirm your decision by completing the form by midnight on Sunday 12 September.
We will allocate the £1,500 incentive on a first come first serve basis until we have sufficient spaces freed up to support those that still require accommodation. If you have paid a deposit of £300, this will be refunded by 17 September for card payments, or direct to your bank account within 10 working days.
Short term accommodation
We are aware that some students choosing to take up the offer would still like to have the option of staying in Belfast from time to time to engage in various other parts of the Student Experience. Therefore, we are working to secure short term accommodation options close to campus where rooms will be bookable on a bed and breakfast or room only basis for one or two nights. We expect to be able to communicate more information about this in the coming few weeks.
Still need accommodation – will you be able to get a room?
In addition to our alternative financial offer, we are currently working to secure additional accommodation, including student accommodation in Ulster University’s Jordanstown Campus and from a variety of alternative providers.
Our priority is to ensure that no student is without accommodation. We will engage with all students over the coming week as the position becomes clearer. This does mean that unfortunately in some cases, accommodation may not be immediately available to you. Please note that due to this situation, the allocation of any available rooms will be based on priority – i.e. distance from home to the University and arrival date (if flights / travel has been pre-booked).
Got a Question?
We are experiencing a high number of calls to our Accommodation Office, and we would ask you to please read our Frequently Asked Questions below before calling. If you have a query that is not addressed by our Frequently Asked Questions you can contact us at accommodation@qub.ac.uk phone our Advice Team between 9.30am to 6.00pm Monday - Friday on 028 9097 3550.
-
What if I choose the incentive but have already accepted my place?
We will cancel your booking and your contract on our system, you will not be liable for accommodation fees.
Will I get my deposit back?
Yes, if you have paid a deposit of £300 via card, we will refund your card by 17 September 2021. If you paid by an alternative method we will contact you to collect bank account details and following receipt of these, the payment of £300 will be sent directly to your bank account within 10 working days
- If I haven’t got a room yet but I need one because of the travelling distance to Queen’s, what should I do?
Due to the unprecedented demand we are unable to predict when there will be availability of places. Priority for allocating rooms will be the basis of distance from Queen’s and arrival date; within Northern Ireland priority will determined by post code. We will keep in regular communication with you about the position of your application.
- Am I eligible to request the incentive package?
If you are student from Northern Ireland you are NOT eligible if you applied for accommodation after 5 August 2021; students from Great Britain or the Republic of Ireland must have applied by 6 September 2021.
Eligible students are those who have applied to Queen’s for accommodation and must have enrolled and registered and be fee-paying students attending at either Queen’s, Ulster University, Belfast Metropolitan, St Mary’s or Stranmillis College.
-
If I take the offer how do I get the money and the sports membership, and when?
The transactions will be implemented after you have completed enrolment and registration:
- We will contact you to collect bank account details, and following receipt of these, the payment of £1,250 will be sent directly to your bank account within 10 working days
- Queen’s Sport will activate your Queen's Sport membership at which point you will be able to access and book activities.
- Your Queen's student card will be credited with £150. Eligible non-Queen’s students will have the equivalent sum paid directly.
- If I haven’t got a room and I cancel my application now, can I apply again later to stay for part of the year?
You are aware that we are experiencing unprecedented demand and at this stage we are unable to predict if there would be availability later this year. If you find you need accommodation later in the academic year, please contact us to check the current position.

This is a 3 part financial incentive and it is not possible to select segments. Off-peak membership of Queen’s Sport is part of the offer as it is a benefit included for all students who live in Queen’s Accommodation.
