Economics and/or Supply Chain Management with interest into resilience of production and supply chain networks.
Overview
The 3-year studentship is fully-funded, covering all fees and providing a stipend. This stipend will support work towards a PhD, awarded on the basis of original research presented in a written thesis. The studentship is intended to support research into a substantive area of supply chain resilience and economic production networks under the supervision Dr Jelena Vlajic (QMS, Supply Chain Management) and Professor Rob Gilles (QMS, Economics).
The project, aims to investigate the resilience of production and supply chain networks. The project would draw upon network analysis, theories of cost allocation on production and supply chain networks, as well as theories of resilient supply chains and circular economy, e.g. how the design of circular flows can increase resilience of systems. In particular, there is an opportunity for collaboration with local businesses. One of opportunities is for example to investigate water pollution abatement and the allocation of the associated costs over a water supply chain network through participation of NI Water. Proposals for the study of other types of networks will be also considered, especially if candidates have established contacts with relevant businesses.
This project takes place within Queen’s Management School, located at Riddel Hall in Belfast, offering world-class research facilities. The successful candidate would be able to draw upon and will be supported by a team of internationally renowned economic theorists, game theorists, and supply chain management specialists.
As a member of the prestigious Russell Group of research-intensive universities, Queen’s University Belfast has an outstanding reputation and tradition for research excellence. The results of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) placed Queen’s University eighth in the UK for research intensity. QMS is one of UK’s leading Management Schools. The School has an excellent track record in research. QMS has a vibrant PhD student community and a broad international network of academic support.
Candidates should ideally hold or be in the process of completing a Master’s Degree in economics, supply chain management, industrial engineering or a cognate discipline with a demonstrated interest in mathematics, game theory, econometric methods, operations research or business analytics/operations management.

Additional course costs
All Students
Depending on the programme of study, there may also be other extra costs which are not covered by tuition fees, which students will need to consider when planning their studies . Students can borrow books and access online learning resources from any Queen's library. If students wish to purchase recommended texts, rather than borrow them from the University Library, prices per text can range from £30 to £100. Students should also budget between £30 to £100 per year for photocopying, memory sticks and printing charges. Students may wish to consider purchasing an electronic device; costs will vary depending on the specification of the model chosen. There are also additional charges for graduation ceremonies, and library fines. In undertaking a research project students may incur costs associated with transport and/or materials, and there will also be additional costs for printing and binding the thesis. There may also be individually tailored research project expenses and students should consult directly with the School for further information.
Bench fees
Some research programmes incur an additional annual charge on top of the tuition fees, often referred to as a bench fee. Bench fees are charged when a programme (or a specific project) incurs extra costs such as those involved with specialist laboratory or field work. If you are required to pay bench fees they will be detailed on your offer letter. If you have any questions about Bench Fees these should be raised with your School at the application stage. Please note that, if you are being funded you will need to ensure your sponsor is aware of and has agreed to fund these additional costs before accepting your place.
