Overview

The project will explore the interplay between the post-Brexit UK-EU relationship with respect to Northern Ireland and north-south cooperation on the island of Ireland including under the 1998 Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement.

Brexit fundamentally changes the context in which north-south cooperation on the island of Ireland takes place and the all-island economy is developed. This is recognized in the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland in its provisions to avoid a physical hardening of the land border, to maintain the single electricity market, and to maintain the ‘necessary conditions’ for continued north-south cooperation, notably in fourteen named areas identified in Article 11 (environment, health, agriculture, transport, education and tourism, as well as in the areas of energy, telecommunications, broadcasting, inland fisheries, justice and security, higher education and sport). However, the extent to which the Protocol and the wider UK-EU relationships provide a sufficient basis for maintaining and indeed promoting north-south cooperation have yet to be subjected to rigorous assessment. Similarly, the impact of Brexit on north-south cooperation remains underassessed.
This project will deliver a comprehensive assessment of the impact of Brexit and the Protocol on north-south cooperation on the island of Ireland. This will involve:
-Establishing the extent to which the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland, its implementation and the wider UK-EU relationship provide a sufficient basis for (a) maintaining the conditions for north-south cooperation on the island of Ireland, and (b) developing the all-island economy
-Identifying areas of actual and potential regulatory divergence and convergence that will affect (a) and (b)
-Identifying via a range of case studies (e,g. on the Integrated Single Electricity Market (ISEM), on agri-food, skills in higher education) how any limitations on the post-Brexit promotion of (a) and (b) in specific sectors may be addressed
The project will focus on one or more specific dimensions to north-south cooperation. Preference will be given to projects that with a comparative dimension

This studentship is open to candidates with an undergraduate degree in a relevant social science discipline, including law, political science, sociology. The successful candidate will be working as part of a team exploring the implications of Brexit for Northern Ireland and will be expected to engage in broader work as part of this project, including participation in workshops, public engagement and wider research. The successful candidate will be expected to complete training and development opportunities available through the QUB Graduate School. Applicants will normally be expected to have completed a masters level degree in social science.

The supervisory team will be drawn from Professor David Phinnemore, Prof. Katy Hayward, Dr. Billy Melo-Araujo, and Dr. Lisa Claire Whitten. This team will be closely involved in assessing the studentship applications.

There will be an interview via MS teams for shortlisted candidates. Interviews are expected to take place in the week beginning 9 May 2022.

Funding Information

This is a studentship funded by the Northern Ireland Department for Economy. Eligible candidates must normally have been ordinarily resident in the UK for three years (with no restrictions). Specific criteria apply to non-EU nationals, to candidates with pre-settled or settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, and to Irish nationals. The studentship is provided in in partnership with the Joint Business Council of the Irish Business and Employers Confederation (IBEC) and the Confederation of British Industry (Northern Ireland) (CBI). The researcher will therefore have access to expertise in north-south cooperation and the implications of Brexit from QUB supervisors and from within IBEC and CBI. This will enable the student to develop a thesis that contributes to the advancement of the academic field and impacts on policymaking. In order to achieve this, the studentship involves a three-month placement (or equivalent) with either or both of IBEC and CBI which will allow the student to contribute to the ongoing work of the JBC relating to north-south cooperation. The placement will involve project work that draws appropriately on the relevant expertise within the JBC and addresses specific interests related to the research project within the JBC and the membership of the CBI and IBEC.

•This should be 2000-4000 words, e.g. essay or thesis chapter.
•Two references [including at least one academic reference].
•Please choose your referees carefully, since we shall be contacting them for an opinion as to your suitably for research.
•If your first language is not English, a language certificate (IELTS 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in all four elements of the test or equivalent qualification acceptable to the university, or other proven expertise in English writing and reading.
•If you obtained your primary degree from a university outside the UK, it can speed up the application process if you can relate your qualification to the UK system.

About the Programme

The programme culminates in the submission of an 80,000-word dissertation.

Mode of study/duration
Registration is on a full-time or part-time basis, under the direction of a supervisory team appointed by the University. You will be expected to submit your thesis at the end of three years of full-time registration for PhD, or two years for MPhil (or part-time equivalent).

Entrance requirements

Graduate
The minimum academic requirement for admission to a research degree programme is normally an Upper Second Class Honours degree from a UK or ROI HE provider, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University. All Students

Depending on the programme of study, there may also be other extra costs which are not covered by tuition fees, which students will need to consider when planning their studies . Students can borrow books and access online learning resources from any Queen's library. If students wish to purchase recommended texts, rather than borrow them from the University Library, prices per text can range from £30 to £100. Students should also budget between £30 to £100 per year for photocopying, memory sticks and printing charges. Students may wish to consider purchasing an electronic device; costs will vary depending on the specification of the model chosen. There are also additional charges for graduation ceremonies, and library fines. In undertaking a research project students may incur costs associated with transport and/or materials, and there will also be additional costs for printing and binding the thesis. There may also be individually tailored research project expenses and students should consult directly with the School for further information.

Bench fees

Some research programmes incur an additional annual charge on top of the tuition fees, often referred to as a bench fee. Bench fees are charged when a programme (or a specific project) incurs extra costs such as those involved with specialist laboratory or field work.
