This exciting new course reflects the School's distinctive position as the only combined School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering in the UK.
It also reflects the reality of the workplace, where chemists and engineers work together and need to be able to communicate and understand each other.
You will study the core topics in both subject areas, and then in the later stages of the course there will be the opportunity to select specialist options modules in either Chemistry or Chemical Engineering. This will determine whether you graduate as MEng (Chemical Engineering) or MSci (Chemistry).
Chemical Technology Degree highlights
We are the only combined School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering in the UK to offer a degree comprising core elements of both disciplines.
- Opportunities to study in Europe, Canada and USA under the Erasmus and TASSEP exchange programmes are available. We also have exchanges with Chalmers Technical University in Gothenburg, Sweden and Delft Technical University in Delft, the Netherlands.
- This is a new course which will be considered for accreditation by both the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and the Institute of Chemical Engineers (IChemE).
- Studying for a Chemical Technology degree at Queen‘s will equip you with technical skills in both science and engineering. Through studying in a joint school of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering you will be trained in the interdisciplinarity needed to work in different areas in the Chemical Industry. The wide range of transferrable skills obtained mean graduate jobs in a range of areas are also open. The school has a links with a number of industries and the Industrial Advisory Board has a strong influence on the curriculum and direction of the undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered. Industry representatives visit the school to recruit undergraduates for student placement and graduate schemes and are involved with judging poster competitions held in the school. There are a wide range of research collaborations within the school and undergraduate research projects are often linked with these areas of research.
- As graduates will have the technical background to apply for either Chemistry or Chemical Engineering positions, the range of jobs open will be extensive. Also due to their in depth understanding of such a range of aspects of the chemical industry, process management positions will also be open to them. As well as scientific and engineering jobs, the high level of numeracy and time and people management skills obtained through group and project work means many other professions such as banking, economics, finance, patent law and teaching will also be possible.
World Class Facilities
- State of the art teaching facilities include recently refurbished lecture theatres and teaching laboratories. During the final year research project, students have the opportunity to work alongside post graduate research students in specialised research labs.
All degrees are modular, and students take six modules (or equivalent) each year. This particular course is almost unique in the UK in combining core aspects of both chemistry and chemical engineering, including extended practical/project work. In the later stages of the course students can chose their own specialist modules. This is a four-year MSci degree, aimed at high-calibre students with the ability and aspiration to practice professionally at the highest levels.
Students take a mix of core Chemistry and Chemical Engineering modules in each of the first two years. In level 3, students have the opportunity to take the Chemistry mini-research projects as well as the Chemical Engineering design project and are also offered the choice of a number of options modules in each of the disciplines. There is further specialisation in level 4, where students choose one discipline for their research project and the Masters level modules taken. The choices made for the final year research project and Masters level modules determine whether a MEng or MSci is awarded at graduation.

Level 1: Physical Theory, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry 1, Introductory Mathematics for Chemists and Engineers, Introduction to Chemical Products and Processes, Heat, Mass and Momentum Transfer.
Level 2: Chemical Process Thermodynamics, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry 2, Heat and Mass Transfer, Process Control and Safety, Structural and Process Chemistry.
Level 3: Spectroscopy and Reaction Engineering, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry 3, Heat and Mass Transfer 2, Chemical Engineering Design and Mini Research Projects, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Options.
Level 4: Research Project, Advanced Organic and Inorganic Chemistry, Options in Applied, Technical and Macromolecular Chemistry, Technology Management & Entrepreneurship and Analytical Techniques for Chemical Processes.

Learning and Teaching
Lectures and laboratory classes take place throughout the week, with the exception of Wednesday afternoons. Lectures, computer classes and tutorials are held throughout the campus with laboratory classes taking place in the David Keir Building.
A combination of written examinations, continual assessment including laboratory, computational and group project work, presentations and a dissertation thesis on an individual research project.
Feedback is general or specific depending on the assessment. General feedback is given to the whole class after each assessment and in the first two years students have the opportunity to discuss assessment results on an individual basis with a lecturer in the school through the personal development plan scheme. Feedback on group work and research projects is given on a specific basis between the lecturer teaching that course and the individual student or group taking the assessment.

Applications are dealt with centrally by the Admissions and Access Service rather than by the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Once your on-line form has been processed by UCAS and forwarded to Queen's, an acknowledgement is normally sent within two weeks of its receipt at the University.
Selection is on the basis of the information provided on your UCAS form, which is considered by the Selector for the degree along with a member of administrative staff from the Admissions and Access Service. Decisions are made on an ongoing basis and will be notified to you via UCAS.
Applicants for this degree must have had, or been able to achieve, a minimum of six GCSE passes at grade B or better (to include English Language and Mathematics), though this profile may change from year to year depending on the demand for places. The Selector also checks that any specific entry requirements in terms of GCSE and/or A-level subjects can be fulfilled.
Offers are normally made on the basis of three A-levels. Two subjects at A-level plus two at AS would also be considered. The offer for repeat candidates may be one grade higher than for first time applicants. Grades may be held from the previous year.
Applicants offering two A-levels and one BTEC Subsidiary Diploma/National Extended Certificate (or equivalent qualification) will also be considered. Offers will be made in terms of performance in individual BTEC units rather than the overall BTEC grade(s) awarded. Please note that a maximum of one BTEC Subsidiary Diploma/National Extended Certificate (or equivalent) will be counted as part of an applicant’s portfolio of qualifications. The normal GCSE profile will be expected.
Applicants offering other qualifications, such as the International Baccalaureate or Irish Leaving Certificate, will also be considered. The same GCSE (or equivalent) profile is usually expected of those candidates offering other qualifications.
The information provided in the personal statement section and the academic reference together with predicted grades are noted but, in the case of this degree, these are not the final deciding factors in whether or not a conditional offer can be made. However, they may be reconsidered in a tie break situation in August.
A-level General Studies and A-level Critical Thinking would not normally be considered as part of a three A-level offer and, although they may be excluded where an applicant is taking four A-level subjects, the grade achieved could be taken into account if necessary in August/September.
Candidates are not normally asked to attend for interview.

Additional course costs
Depending on the programme of study, there may be extra costs which are not covered by tuition fees, which students will need to consider when planning their studies.
Students can borrow books and access online learning resources from any Queen's library.
If students wish to purchase recommended texts, rather than borrow them from the University Library, prices per text can range from £30 to £100. A programme may have up to 6 modules per year, each with a recommended text.
Students should also budget between £30 to £75 per year for photocopying, memory sticks and printing charges.
Students undertaking a period of work placement or study abroad, as either a compulsory or optional part of their programme, should be aware that they will have to fund additional travel and living costs.
If a final year includes a major project or dissertation, there may be costs associated with transport, accommodation and/or materials. The amount will depend on the project chosen. There may also be additional costs for printing and binding.
Students may wish to consider purchasing an electronic device; costs will vary depending on the specification of the model chosen.
There are also additional charges for graduation ceremonies, examination resits and library fines.
Chemical Technology costs
"Students are required to buy a laboratory coat in year 1 at a cost of £15. Students have the option to hire a locker, at a cost of £5 per student per year. Students have the option to join the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) at a cost of £19 per annum.
