Yes. All Joint Honours French degrees have University permission to be classified as follows: Level 1 - 10% Level 2 - 20% Year Abroad - 10% Level 3 - 60%

Programme Specific Regulations

Unless exempted by the Head of School on the basis of prior learning or exceptional personal/medical circumstances, students will be required to complete a year-long period of residence in a French-speaking country between Level 2 and Level 3. Students will enrol for the MML3040 International Placement module and take the ‘Working and Studying Abroad’ module, FRH3050. Students who are exempted from residence abroad requirements may be required to undertake an alternative form of assessment.

On completing Level 1, a Single Honours student in either of French or International Studies who has completed 40 CATS at Level 1 in the other subject and has achieved an average mark across the 40 CATS of 60 or above may be admitted to this Joint Honours Programme subject to having obtained the approval of the Adviser of Studies in the subject in which they have only 40 CATS.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF PROGRAMME

A key premise of this four-year joint programme is that understanding the present and anticipating the future requires the ability to study and interpret the past - in terms of events, literature and wider cultural environment - as a means to understanding the present. The International Studies part of the programme is designed to allow students to engage with political developments, to understand better many contemporary issues (such as the war on terror, sustainability, the banking crisis and the ongoing process of European integration and affords students the possibility of studying other parts of the world such as the Middle East and Southern Africa). The French part of this programme enables students to focus more specifically on the French-speaking world and to appreciate the position of France and other Francophone countries towards the above issues.

The Joint Programme in French and International Studies has been designed to provide students with:

• an intellectual training in the separate and overlapping disciplines of International Studies and French which, while discrete subjects, are also complementary and mutually enriching;

• advanced linguistic skills, which are informed by general language awareness, intercultural competence and high levels of critical thinking.

• a knowledge of political perspectives on society and culture by relating theory and a range of comparative observations about people's lifestyles.

• an appreciation of international politics and the role, purpose and priorities of international organisations

• an in-depth exploration of the causes of war and conflict across the globe

• a perspective from which students gain an understanding of socio-cultural differences and similarities and how they arise, are transmitted and develop; acquire knowledge and understanding of the inter-relationship between texts and contexts, a familiarity with debates surrounding culture and identity, both individual and communal, and skills in synthesising and developing ideas and arguments from diverse literary and other contemporary sources.

• a range of skills which together foster the ability to practise self-motivated learning and increase the capacity to undertake independent learning in a progressive way.

Together, both subjects together equip individuals with the ability to:

• think critically, process and understand complex information;

• evaluate primary and secondary sources;

• work well in groups and be a team-player

• take initiative and be entrepreneurial;

• be adaptable and have the ability to deal with unexpected situations

• be able to interact with people of different cultures

Furthermore, students benefit from a multi-disciplinary education which gives them a large skill set and opens a wide range of career options following graduation.

More generally, the Joint Programme in French and International Studies aims to:

• attract students from local, national, and international contexts, through a variety of entry routes, and then provide and deliver the best possible learning and teaching experience, in an environment of equality, tolerance, and mutual respect;

• provide students with the necessary intellectual, practical, and key skills to enable them to develop as independent, reflective lifelong learners and able employees;

• develop a broad context for future employment, in which graduates appreciate the continuing value of an education in these two disciplines.

Notes

Stage 1: In French, students must take one of the core modules FRH1101 or FRH1111 of FRH1121, plus one of the Stage 1 FRH optional modules listed. In International Studies, students must take the three core modules PAI1003, PAI1006 and PAI1009.

Stage 2: In French, students must take the core module FRH2101, plus one of the Stage 2 FRH optional modules listed. In International Studies, students must take the core module PAI2017 plus two of the Stage 2 PAI optional modules listed. Students should pay particular attention to any Level 2 pre-requisites that are required for Level 3 modules and elect their modules accordingly.

Stage 3: In French, students must take the core module FRH3101, plus one of the Stage 3 FRH optional modules listed. In International Studies, students must take three of the Stage 3 PAI optional modules listed OR students may opt to take either of the double weighted modules (PAI3097 or PAI3099) plus one other optional module. Students should pay particular attention to any Level 2 pre-requisites that are required for Level 3 modules and elect their modules accordingly. Please ensure an even split between semesters when choosing optional modules. PLEASE NOTE: Students are NOT permitted to take TWO double-weighted modules, nor a Dissertation in both Joint subject areas. * Students will be notified each academic year of the optional modules being offered in the following academic year. Students are advised that not all optional modules will necessarily be offered in each academic year. Also, the delivery of a module may be subject to a minimum number of enrolments as well as unforeseen circumstances (e.g. illness of a member of staff). The range and content of optional modules will change over time as degree programmes develop and students’ choice of optional modules may also be limited due to timetabling constraints.
