Programme Specific Regulations

Attendance
Students are required to fulfil the compulsory attendance requirements for each module in terms of:
Timetabled classes (to include lectures, seminars, tutorials, practicals, workshops and any other classes which may from time to time be prescribed); and clinical practice. At the discretion of the Programme Co-ordinator, students will normally have the opportunity to compensate for practice missed through absence or illness or other recognised extenuating circumstances.
Students who fail to satisfy the attendance requirements will be referred to the Programme Coordinator and if their absence is deemed to compromise satisfactory completion of the programme, they may be referred to the Board of Examiners for consideration.
Time will not be made up during revision and assessment weeks without the approval of the programme co-ordinator. The NMC requires that all programme time (theory and practice, for the full 45 programmed weeks each year) is completed. Any time that is ‘lost’ from the time allocated for either learning in practice or theory must be made up at the end of the programme in order to meet the requirements for registration.

Progress

Students must complete all modules and achieve satisfactory performance in all compulsory elements. The pass mark for all modules is 40% apart from the Practice Modules. Re-sits will be facilitated at the next available opportunity.

Students whose progress appears to be unsatisfactory at any stage of their studies, who are absent from a University examination for a reason not approved by the School, or who record two absent medicals for an assessable component of the programme will be considered by the Board of Examiners.
A student on temporary withdrawal shall return to the programme at the point where they were last deemed competent. A midwifery student who has an interruption to a pre-registration midwifery programme of education shall complete the outstanding period of that programme. Programme providers must ensure that the student’s acquired knowledge and skills remain valid to enable the completion of the competencies set by the by the NMC.

In conjunction with their personal tutor and programme co-ordinator, an orientation plan will be developed to ensure a smooth return to clinical and academic learning.

A student whose temporary withdrawal from the programme exceeds two years will be required to permanently withdraw from the programme in line with University regulations. If the student wishes to return to the programme at a later time, they will be required to reapply to the School.

A student who has taken a temporary withdrawal will be required to complete a self-declaration form for Good health and Character prior to return to the programme, declaring any criminal record they may have attracted during absence.

Exit Points

The BSc (Hons) Midwifery Sciences is a degree programme comprising a professional award which leads to eligibility to seek registration on the Nursing and Midwifery Council Professional Register. Students who do not wish or are not permitted to continue on the professional qualification programme may be permitted to transfer to another programme as follows:

1. Students who have successfully completed 120 CATS at Level 1 and do not wish or are unable to complete their midwifery programme may be awarded a Certificate in Healthcare Sciences or;
2. Students who successfully complete 120 CATS at Level 1 and 120 CATS at Level 2 and who do not wish or are unable to complete their midwifery programme may be awarded a Diploma in
Healthcare Sciences or;
3. Students who have successfully accrued 120 credit points at level 1, 120 credit points at level 2 and 120 Credits at Level 3 may be awarded a Degree in Healthcare Sciences.

A student, on successful completion of the programme, is eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council on the professional register as a Registered Midwife. A Registered Midwife can expect career possibilities in a wide range of hospital and community settings.
Clinical placements are within the all Health and Social Care Trusts in Northern Ireland. Students have the opportunity to choose to undertake an elective clinical placement outside Northern Ireland; the duration of this placement will not exceed four weeks.
All students will have access to a personal tutor throughout their programme. In clinical placement they will be supported by a sign off mentor midwife and a midwifery lecturer / teaching fellow from the University.

The aim of the programme is to prepare the student to practice safely and effectively so that, on registration, the student can assume the responsibilities and accountability for their practice as a midwife.
