Aim:The purpose of this workshop is to guide you in preparing, creating and evaluating assessments within your teaching modules. You will consider Programme and Module Learning Outcomes to plan teaching, learning, assessment and feedback and inform the quality process.
You will discuss appropriate Assessment and Feedback strategies for your module(s), taking into account the University’s assessment policy and the UK Quality Code for Higher Education. You will examine the teaching methods employed and the assessment tasks that students are asked to undertake to determine whether they are aligned to the learning activities assumed in the intended learning outcomes. You will review the assessment schedules, feedback and evaluation methods for the formative and summative assessment in your module.
You will examine a range of formative and summative assessment methods used to facilitate learning. You will appraise strategies, including peer and self-assessment to improve formative assessment. You will discuss appropriate assessments for your students, including MCQs and electronic assessment. You will explore methods of setting and marking summative assessments, in particular how the development of assessment criteria and rubrics can provide both the student and the lecturer insight into a student’s development and performance.
Learning Outcomes: By the end of the workshop you should be able to:
- LO1 Align teaching methods and assessment tasks to the learning activities assumed in the intended learning outcomes of a module
- LO2 Select methods for formative and summative assessment that will support teaching and learning in your module
- LO3 Use assessment criteria and rubrics effectively to clarify performance and provide timely feedback to students
