Costing

Our Role

The work of the Costing section is primarily driven by the requirements of the Transparency Review Approach to Costing (TRAC) process.

TRAC is the standard methodology used by Universities across the UK to cost the following main activities:

  • Teaching - split between publicly funded and non-publicly funded.
  • Research - split between publicly funded and non-publicly funded.
  • Other Activities.

Responsibilities

  • To maintain and develop the University’s costing systems and procedures in accordance with national guidance.
  • The completion and submission of the annual TRAC return to HEFCE.
  • The completion and submission of the annual TRAC for Teaching, TRAC (T), return to HEFCE.
  • The collection and interpretation of Time Allocation Schedules (TAS) that record academic staff time for TRAC.
  • The determination of the annual Estates and Indirect cost rates to inform costing Research projects.
  • To determine charge out rates for Major Research Facilities (MRF) and Laboratory Technicians in accordance with TRAC guidance.
  • The maintenance and development of pFACT, the University’s web based Research costing system.
  • To provide a comprehensive professional support function in the use of pFACT, both to the Research Support Office and academic staff.
