UMAL continue to advise that any staff/student due to travel on authorised essential university business should consult the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website for up-to-date information on the travel status for relevant destinations.
The FCO updated its global advisory against ‘all but essential’ travel, exempting destinations that no longer pose an unacceptably high risk for British travellers. gov.uk
Where the FCO advise that 'all travel is banned' to a destination, there will be no cover available. Schools/Departments should not authorise any trips to countries designated as such.
Irrespective of destination, there is a total exclusion now on all Covid-related cancellation/disruption cover. Queen’s will be unable to claim for any such losses for Covid-related reasons, including changes in FCO guidance prior to or during a trip. All staff and students should be aware of this, and factor it into any decision to travel.
For avoidance of doubt, as outlined in FAQ’s, the University is advising staff and students against all but essential travel for business or study outside of Northern Ireland. You are asked to carefully consider your travel plans and cancel or rearrange them unless absolutely essential.
Where school-approved Travel on University business is possible, staff/students will be able to access our Emergency Medical Cover - including Covid-related treatment while overseas.
As/when travel options improve, it is important to note that the situation is likely to remain volatile. Find below guidance on a number of possible scenarios that could arise:
Emergency Medical/Travel cover will not apply if, at time of booking, FCO advice to a country is 'all travel banned'.
- Emergency Medical/Travel cover will apply if FCO advice is “only essential travel”. It is for each School /Directorate to ensure a suitable risk assessment has been carried out and travel has been deemed 'essential'.
Emergency Medical/Travel cover will apply if FCO advice allows for travel to a country at time of booking, but this changes prior to departure to 'Against all but Essential Travel'. In this scenario, it is advised that a new risk assessment is completed.
It is the responsibility of Schools/Directorates to ensure that all approved travel is University work-related and based on the latest FCO advice. Before planning any international travel, please check the FCO website, as travel advice is subject to regular change. If travel is authorised by any School or Directorate, staff/students should notify the University Insurance Section, of the relevant details for the journey, by completing an online travel notification form.
