Clerical_Recruitment_220W_220HThere are a number of contract types and routes to fill clerical posts at grades 2, 3 and 4 within the University, see summary in the table below.

The Clerical Recruitment Guide outlines the route to fill each type of clerical vacancy and provides clarity on the actions required by Line Managers and Human Resources within the clerical recruitment process. Following the processes laid out in the guide will help ensure that clerical posts are filled in suitable timeframes with high quality candidates.

Permanent Normally when a new post is created or to replace a member of staff who leaves. Normally filled through the redeployment register and/or boarding lists.

Temporary (more than 12 weeks)

To cover sickness absences or as a stop gap until a more permanent vacancy is filled.

As cover for long term sickness absence, maternity leave, career break etc.

Routes to Fill Clerical Posts

In addition the traditional routes to filling clerical posts, internal options, redeployment and/or from boarding lists, the University also operates:

A Short term appointments register which is used to engage casual clerical workers. The maximum duration for each engagement is 12 weeks and be used to access temporary cover at very short notice on an “as and when required basis”.

A Peripatetic Pool which comprises a number of Grade 3 Clerical Officers engaged on a permanent basis appointed specifically to fill temporary clerical vacancies of four to eighteen months, for absence cover such as maternity leave, career break and long term sickness absence. The purpose of the Peripatetic Pool is to provide a solution to the challenges of filling temporary vacancies.
