Shift allowances are payable only to designated staff who work the appropriate arrangement as specified in the appointment letter. These payments normally apply to Operational Staff who work regular shift patterns such as Security Staff, Centre Attendants, Library Attendants.
15% Regular Shift Allowance
Where there is a requirement to work on a regular shift basis over a 7 day period (ie : where there are regular starting and finishing times of shifts), a shift allowance of 15% will be paid. For regular shifts, there could be minor variations in terms of starting and finishing times though these would not be significant.
18% Irregular Shift Allowance
Where there is a requirement to work on an irregular shift basis over a 7 day period (ie : where there are significant differences in the starting and finishing times of shifts), a shift allowance of 18% will be paid.
6% Night Shift Allowance
Where there is a requirement to work throughout the night on night shift (ie: where the significant period of the shift is worked after midnight), a night shift allowance of 6% will be paid.
The payment of shift allowances will not be taken into account when calculating overtime and such payments are not pensionable.
Shift allowances will only be paid when the necessity to work over a 7 day period is a regular requirement. Where there is not a regular requirement to work over a 7 day period, a shift allowance will not be paid. Where there is an ad hoc requirement to work over the normal 5 day arrangement, time will be taken off in lieu. Overtime payments may be made in agreement with the Line Manager.
If working over a 5 day period, which includes a Sat/Sun, a shift allowance will not be paid, eg: working Thurs – Mon 5 to 9 pm.
