Sign Language
In Britain the term sign language usually refers to British Sign Language (BSL). BSL is a complete language with a unique vocabulary, construction and grammar. In Britain there are over 87,000 people whose first or preferred language is BSL.
The Language Centre currently run a Sign Language programme which includes classes at beginner and post-beginner levels. Enrolment for Sign Language Classes will open ahead of each semester and classes will start in January, April and October each year.
Both BSL levels 1 and 2 consist of 3 modules or units. Students are free to register for 1, 2 or 3 modules as and when they wish. Please note that in order to receive a FULL Signature certificate for BSL Level 1 or 2, students MUST successfully complete all 3 modules.
Please note that you must undertake modules in order that is 101, 102 and finally 103. With level 2 it is 201, 202 and finally 203. We have the following classes starting week beginning Monday 24 April 2023.

All course fees are payable in full on enrolment.
There are different fees depending upon your registration type, QUB student, staff or members of the public. Please note that there is no concession fee available with our Sign Language courses.
- How do I enrol?
Enrolment is available online from 1 MARCH for classes starting week beginning Monday 24 April 2023. Early enrolment is recommended as courses are popular and often fill up quickly. We only accept online enrolment and you can register and pay online on our website. Please use the link above.
- How often do I attend?
Classes for BSL101 are 2 hours per week. Students will be assessed during normal class time in week 10.
Classes for BSL102 are 2 hours per week. Students will be assessed during normal class time in week 11.
Classes for BSL103 are 2 hours per week. Students will be assessed during normal class time in week 11.
Classes for BSL203 are 2.5 hours per week, plus 3 Saturday morning classes of 2.5 hours. Students will be assessed during normal class time in week 11.
- Do I have to pay an exam fee to Signature?
No. Your exam fee is included in the course fee.
