What is the WVD?

The WVD is Queen’s deployment of the on-campus desktop build onto Cloud based infrastructure and is accessible by a browser or by downloading the Remote Desktop client onto your home PC. The on-campus desktop build can be found on any of the shared PCs in the McClay Library and other shared computing spaces and give access to around 130 Applications used in Modules across the Courses offered by Queen’s. If you are unable to come on-campus or any reason, then from your remote location you can still access these Applications from your home PC via the WVD.

How do I access the WVD?

The WVD is accessible to all Queen’s students. The WVD is not accessible to Staff by default however if a member of Staff has a particular need for WVD access please request access via Request It Support from the Queen’s Online homepage.

Please note: the instructions are updated regularly so please check back occasionally to ensure you have the latest version

There are limited numbers of virtual desktops available to students so, when finished working, please sign out (see instructions above) to free up resources for your fellow students. You will be automatically signed out after 30 mins of inactivity.

What device do I need to access the WVD?

The WVD is accessible from most client devices however the user experience is poor on devices which do not have a separate keyboard, for example mobile phones and most iPads. This is because when the keyboard is displayed on the mobile device it largely obscures the virtual desktop. IS recommend you use a PC, laptop or an iPad with a separate keyboard.

Your WVD user experience will also be impacted by your broadband speed. You will need between 1.5 - 3 Mbps depending on what you are doing. See here for more information.

During what times is the WVD accessible?

The WVD is accessible 24x7 every day although there will be less remote desktops available between midnight and 8am.

I still have an issue with the WVD – where can I get help?

If you are still having an issue with the WVD or an App running in the WVD please contact your School Computing Officer. If your School does not have a dedicated Computing Officer, please Request It Support via the Queen's Online homepage.
