Keeping Your Library Safe

Find out how we are keeping our libraries safe for both students and staff.

McClay Library - External view, evening, winter

All library branches remain open. Please see the library opening hours for further details. Opening hours may be reduced at short notice due to staff shortages so please check back to the library website, Library News and social media channels for up-to-date information before travelling to the library. We are continually looking at ways to ensure that we continue to keep our library users and staff safe.

If you are using any of the libraries, please remember the following:

  • You are required to wear a face covering in any of the Library buildings, even when sitting at a study desk or PC. Ensure your face covering is worn appropriately, covering both nose and mouth.
  • Face coverings are available at the McClay Library reception if you forget to bring one.
  • Where possible, maintain social distancing.
  • Hand sanitising and cleaning stations are available throughout the libraries. Please use these to clean your study space before and after use.
  • Windows are open throughout the building to ensure adequate ventilation. Please do not close windows, and please remember to bring plenty of layers to wrap up if you get cold.
  • If you wish to visit Special Collections and Archives, please note that access is available on an appointment basis only. Please refer to the Special Collections webpages for further details about the appointment system and how to book an appointment.
  • Group study rooms are available and can be booked through Queen’s Online. At some times, the numbers using the study rooms might be reduced. Guidance about the maximum numbers allowed in each study room will be indicated on the study room door. Please do not move furniture or chairs into the study rooms in order to accommodate more than the maximum number of users.
  • Lateral flow tests are available from key points across campus, including the reception at the McClay Library.
  • If you require a PCR test, these are available from the PEC car park.

If you prefer not to visit the Library or are self-isolating, we have a huge number of online resources available to you wherever you are studying. You can access our resources through the following avenues:

If you are unclear about where to start, contact your subject librarian or visit the guide associated with your subject to find out more details and guidance about which resources are more applicable to you. Alternatively visit our webpage on how to access e-resources off-campus.

Staff are available to offer help, support and to answer queries. You can speak to a member of staff at our service points, like the Borrower Services Desk in any of the library branches or our Enquiry Desks (Floor 1 and 2, McClay Library). Please ring the bell at any of these desks to alert us that you need assistance.

Alternatively, you can make contact with a member of staff via Library Chat, email or social media. Visit the Contact Us webpages to find further details.
