Student Residential Assistant
Whilst there are no specified contact hours a commitment of 15 hours per week is required.
As part of its commitment to improving the student experience, building a strong resident student community in which cultural diversity is promoted and improving the services offered to residents, Queen’s employs Student Resident Assistants across its accommodation sites. Student Resident Assistants are the first point of contact and conduit to the Community Youth Workers for students who may have concerns about their accommodation or some other aspect of their student lives. In addition to helping new students settle in to their new residence and feel comfortable in Belfast, Resident Assistants will proactively support Community Youth Workers in providing a vibrant social and pastoral student community as well as acting as a signpost for other University Services, Students’ Union Services and appropriate external services that are available to help students address any difficulties they may face.
Attendance at the Residential Assistant Induction Training in September is required which includes attendance at OCN Level 2 accredited workshop on ‘Improving assertiveness and decision making skills’ delivered by Open Your Mind programme.
Cognitive/intellectual skills, which include being able to:
- identify, analyse and solve problems by prioritising tasks, coping with complexity, setting achievable goals and taking action
- work with information, assess risk and draw conclusions (analysis, attention to detail, judgement)
Professional attributes/attitudes which include:
- possessing high level transferable key skills such as the ability to work with others in a team, to communicate (both orally and in writing), influence, negotiate and resolve conflict
- displaying interpersonal sensitivity, global and cultural awareness, moral and ethical awareness and being able to adjust behaviour accordingly
- having the ability and desire to learn for oneself and improve one’s self-awareness and performance, to uphold the values of lifelong learning and demonstrate emotional intelligence
- demonstrating confidence and motivation to start and to finish the job, adaptability/flexibility, creativity, initiative, leadership, decision-making, negotiating and the ability to cope with stress
Business and organisational skills which include being able to:
- be aware of organisational culture, policies and processes
- develop ability to communicate (orally and in writing) within a business context
