Homework Clubs
The Homework Clubs is one of the most popular volunteering initiatives for students attending Queen’s University Belfast.
The initiative aims to raise the educational attainment and aspirations of children and young people living in some of the most educationally underachieving areas of Belfast whilst giving Queen’s students the perfect opportunity to gain hands on experience in tutoring and working with young people.
The Homework Clubs are supported by Queen’s student volunteers who provide homework support to children and young people on a regular basis.
The student volunteers interact with the children/young people on a social level by engaging in meaningful conversations and by organising recreational activities as well as homework tutoring, which subsequently aids their own personal development, raises their social insight and improves their employability prospects.
Students participating in Homework Clubs are required to complete the following:
- Mandatory induction training session, lasting 4 hours.
- Specific Homework Club local induction for 3 hours.
- Completion of Safeguarding Check (Access NI) for majority of Clubs, 1 hour.
- At least 5 homework club sessions, typically 3 hours per session. (i.e. 15 hours minimum)
- Session planning time of 30 minutes per session. (i.e. a minimum of 5 x 0.5 hours – 2.5 hours)
- Participation in at least two out of four specialized workshops, 3 hours per workshop. (i.e. 6 hours minimum)
