This five day course will introduce participants to the history of creative approaches to writing ethnography, and to key debates in and about ethnographic writing.  Participants will be:

 

  • Challenged to think about the ways in which style and genre influence and shape the communication of ethnographic knowledge, in their own work and that of others.
  • Given the opportunity to try their hands at different types of writing, applying and exploring various creative approaches to presenting their own work.
  • Given space to reflect critically on the exercises, both individually and in groups.
  • Receiving constructive peer feedback on their work, and provide constructive feedback to their fellow participants.

 

This activity will run for a total of 5 days, with 2 sessions on each day from 9:00-12:30 and 1:30-5:00 daily, with a break for lunch between 12:30 and 1:30.  The session format will be as follows: 

DAY 1

SESSION 1: Introduction to Creative Ethnographic Writing

SESSION 2: The Senses as Starting Point

 

DAY 2

SESSION 3: Beautiful Words: Using Poetry to Express Sensory Data

SESSION 4: The Art of Ethnographic Description: Using Prose Creatively

 

DAY 3

SESSION 5: Working with Dialogue: Expressing the Spoken Word through Drama

SESSION 6: Through the Ethnographer’s Eyes: Using Images in Ethnographic Writing

 

DAYS 4 & 5

SESSIONS 7-10:
Format: Dedicated work times; one-on-one discussions  and feedback, if desired by participants; lengthier periods of peer sharing, discussion, and constructive critique over the final two days of the course.

*This is a specialized course targeting postgraduate students who use ethnography as a methodology.
