The recent detection of gravitational waves is arguably one of the most important results in experimental physics. It is a direct confirmation of general relativity and it paves the way for a new branch of astronomy and astrophysics.

Professor Stephen Smartt, actively involved in the collaboration that led to the detection of gravitational waves, will present the main physics behind gravitational waves and their detection, and discuss the main implications of this exciting detection.
