What can you do to “Go Further”

There are lots of employability-enhancing activities and programmes available through Queens.  Here are a few suggestions that may be of particular interest to students of English- 

Any year:

  • Discover routes to Degree Plus
  • Keep up to date with copies of The Edit which offers specific careers information for AHSS students
  • Create a LinkedIn Profile and start to build up professional networks and learn about a specific sector you might be interested in
  • Participate in Insight into Management- a 3 day business skills programme run during Development Weeks
  • Find out more about Global Opportunities
  • Consider applying for Project Children – 8 week paid internship in the US. Internships are provided in many fields, opportunity to develop transferable skills. Application deadline is in spring.
  • Find voluntary work through Volunteer SU and at Volunteer Now.
  • Organisations such as BUNACCCUSACamp America and Projects Abroad advertise a variety of paid and voluntary vacation-time opportunities throughout the world. 
  • The Leonardo da Vinci EU Connections programme is a 10 week fully funded language course + internship in a European country (eligibility restrictions apply).

  • Attend Careers fairs and employer events.  These happen all year round and will be advertised on MyFuture.

Look for relevant summer work:

  • Interested in Teaching? Gain some classroom-based experience in preparation for PGCE applications in final year.
  • Interested in Marketing or Event Management? Consider a Brand/Campus Ambassador role with employers such as Teach First or Enterprise Rent-A-Car
  • Large companies in other sectors may offer year-long placements and summer internships. MyFuture,RatemyplacementProspectsTargetjobs and Gradcracker are useful sites for finding these. Many of the deadlines are set around December so it’s best to start applying in autumn.
  • Are you clear about which career option you want to follow?  Participate in the Alumni Career Mentoring Scheme.
  • If you are involved in a club or society, now is the time to take on some leadership role within it to gain evidence of those extra skills an employer looks for.
  • Interested in Banking and Finance? A lot of the big companies run summer internship programmes e.g. Bank of England,  BarclaysCitiDeloitteEYHSBCJP MorganMorgan StanleyPwCStandard LifeRBS and a few run year-long placements e.g. DeloitteEYFirst DerivativesKPMG and PwC. Apply early in the autumn term!
