Student Work Experience Opportunities

Work Shadowing and Internships

We are committed to developing work-ready graduates and are focussed on offering our students access to valuable and impactful work experience opportunities through work shadowing and internships. 

We have optimistic plans in place for in-person internships and a gradual return to normal in 2022. However, we are also planning for a flexible approach which may involve virtual internships.

Impact Project

What? 

The Impact Project is designed to facilitate students with work experience where you can deliver on a short sharp project with a participating employer.  

Who? 

Students in a course of study that does not have a compulsory placement year.  More specific criteria may be applied with individual internships depending on employer requirements. 

When? 

4 weeks approximately 25 hours per week in summer 2022.  

Why?

Provides you with an excellent opportunity to gain work experience and potentially develop a relationship with a future employer. It’s also a great addition to your CV and a discussion point at interviews. 

Benefits to students: 

Impact Projects give students the opportunity to gain valuable employability skills and the opportunity to be considered for Queen’s Degree Plus Employability Award. You will also receive a bursary of £1,000 upon completion. 

Deadline for Applications:

Most internships will be advertised in Feb/March 2022, closing dates will be detailed.

 

Impact Project Eligibility

Impact Projects are restricted to students from the following courses that do not have a compulsory placement year:

  • Arts, English, Languages
  • Criminology, Education, Social Policy, Sociology,
  • History, Anthropology, Philosophy, Politics
  • Psychology
  • Archaeology and Palaeoecology, Architecture, Civil and Structural Engineering, Geography, Planning
  • Mathematics, Physics
  • Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
  • Chemistry, Chemical Engineering
  • Biological Sciences
  • Biomedical Sciences

Summer Internships

What? 

An immersive period of work experience throughout the summer where you will gain valuable experience and make a positive contribution to a local employer. 

When? 

Approximately 8 weeks full-time during Summer 2022. 

Who? 

Open to all QUB students. More specific criteria may be applied with individual internships depending on employer requirements. 

Why? 

Provides you with an excellent immersive opportunity to gain work experience and potentially develop a relationship with a future employer. It’s also a great addition to your CV and a discussion point at interviews. 

Benefits to students: 

Summer internships offer you the opportunity to gain valuable real world work experience where you can develop your employability skills. You will be eligible to for the Queen’s DegreePlus Employability Award and will also receive a salary of approximately £2,500.

Work Shadowing Week 11-14 April

What?

Work shadowing differs from internships and placements as it’s informal and unpaid and lasts for only one day.

Who?

Open to all students. Numbers will be limited although we will endeavour to support as many students as possible.

When?

‘Work Shadowing Week’, 11- 14 April 2022

Why?

Provides you will a valuable insight into an employer by allowing you to observe professionals in the workplace.

Benefits?

This is a great way to explore a sector you are interested and help you decide if the career path is right for you. It’s also a great addition to your CV and a discussion point at interviews.
