What have you done in addition to your degree to enhance your employability and what do you feel you’ve gained from this?

I was the SSCC rep for my course in first year.

In second year I was accepted onto the Peer Mentor programme which allowed me to organise events for the first years at Queens and to specifically look after and help the new IBML students.  This also gained me my Degree Plus Qualification.

In second year I also took part in three Business Challenges; the KPMG International Case Competition, the IBM University Business Challenge and the CIMA International Case Competition, all of which gave me a massive insight into the roles of Advisory and Consultancy in the Financial Services sector and gave me a good idea of where I wanted to look for graduate jobs.  These competitions are also massively important for networking as you get one-on-one guidance from high level members of the companies.

My third year was spent in Barcelona working for ISUS, an international Language Learning Solutions provider.  I was part of a team with members all over the world including Miami, Guatemala, China, Ireland and Greece.  Being a part of such a multi-cultural business was refreshing and taught me many invaluable skills required today in such an international business market.  The professional skills gained from this placement will move forward with me into my future career and the experience has left me feeling confident and ready for my next step after graduation.

Any advice for other Queen's students?

Get involved!!!  Whether it is with a sports team, a society, a business challenge or even a study group.  Make sure to get stuck in and enjoy the Queens experience.  There is so much more to be gained than your degree, so take advantage of every opportunity around you.  You’ll kick yourself if you let them pass you by.
