My Story
David Finnegan

MSc Applied Mathematics and Physics (Graduated 2009)
Senior Consultant for First Derivatives, Hong Kong

Where are you now?

Senior Consultant for First Derivatives, currently contracted to Bank of Tokyo - Mitsubishi UFG Ltd – worked for them in London for two and a half years and now Hong Kong for a year.

How did you get there?

I joined First Derivatives with no real experience in finance or technology, but applied myself to their training program and learned as much as I could in a short space of time. After only a few months I was then off to London and ended up with Bank of Tokyo – Mitsubishi UFG Ltd in a very technical role – I accepted challenging work and put in long hours inside and outside work to help develop my skills, and this paid off greatly as I became a valued team member. It also helped me discover the field of work I really enjoy and want to continue my career in.

Advice for current Queen's students?

Work hard, be confident in your skills and try to get experience outside of university as well, be it as simple as part-time work or more adventurous like studying abroad – it’ll benefit you in the long run.
