What have you done in addition to your degree to enhance your employability and what do you feel you’ve gained from this?
Summer internship at Clarus Financial Technology, returning to QUB for the 2016/2017 year to complete my masters in physics
Throughout the duration of my internship I have gained invaluable experience which cannot be learned in any way other than physically being in the working environment day in day out. Experience not just in the financial markets directly related to my position, but also a lesson in how to conduct oneself in full-time employment as a whole and what the convention is regarding many aspects of formal working life.
What are the key steps that led to this position?
I would urge all undergraduate student to use the QUB “myfuture” website. After you enter your personal details into the website (your course, key skills, upload a CV etc.) they advertise jobs and careers tailored to suit you specifically in a straightforward and concise way. Without the site I wouldn't have my current employment.
When writing a CV or cover letter for applying to a job, do not look online for templates or “key buzz words”, make sure these documents are 100% personal because it will stand out. There’s nothing that employers hate more than reading through countless applications that seem somewhat fake in that sense.
Any advice for other QUB students?
It’s never too early to search or apply for a summer internship or post-graduate job, why wait until the last minute? Apply for as many jobs as possible and when the time comes, you could have a wide range of options to choose from.
