BA Joint Hons History and English Literature
What have you done in addition to your degree to enhance your employability and what do you feel you’ve gained from this?
I decided that I wanted to complete a semester abroad when I was in my second year at Queen’s. I wanted to see what it was like to study at another institution; therefore I applied to study at the University of Cologne in Germany for one semester during my final year.
It was an experience I will never forget; I would urge everyone to spend at least one semester at another institution. Not only did it allow me to interact with people from all over the world in an entirely new academic setting, it allowed me to become much more confident in my work and I have even considered applying to study for my PhD at the University of Berlin.
I also want to emphasise that the additional grant given to me by Queen’s meant that I did not have to work while I was spending my semester abroad; therefore there is no need to be worried about the financial aspect of studying abroad. It is a once in a life time opportunity that is being offered, and I would urge every student to at least consider the Erasmus programme offered by Queen’s. It is a great talking point in an interview as well; a future employer will find it impressive if you show that you moved away voluntarily and immersed yourself in an alien culture.
Any advice for other Queen's students?
Make the most of your time here at Queen’s! It will be short-lived!
