What have you done in addition to your degree to enhance your employability and what do you feel you’ve gained from this?

As part of my degree pathway I completed a placement with Colgate-Palmolive as a Business Analyst, which gave me the opportunity to gain valuable experience and an insight into industry.  I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of my year with Colgate in Dublin and became passionate about pursuing a career as an analyst.

While based in Dublin, I became involved in fundraising activities, language courses, sports and social activities, all of which helped me gain confidence and teamwork skills.   Since returning to QUB, I have represented Colgate at Careers Fairs to promote their placement opportunities and I have participated in QUB Dragons Den which offered me a great opportunity to improve my pitching and presentation skills.  I also feel very lucky to have been offered a graduate role in Technology Consulting with Deloitte UK and am really looking forward to graduating and starting my career to utilise my knowledge gained to date and also gain more experience and expand my skillset.

Making use of Careers, Employability and Skills at Queen’s

The Computer Science placement team were very supportive when I was looking for a placement in second year and guided me throughout the process of applications, interviews and assessment centres and so helped me secure my internship with Colgate.

Since returning to QUB for final year, I have attended numerous beneficial presentations including a Commercial Awareness and LinkedIn event, all of which were very informative.  On top of this the Computer Science Careers team have been very helpful in reviewing my applications and providing invaluable hints and tips before interviews.

Any advice for other Queen's students?

For me, my placement at Colgate-Palmolive was brilliant and helped me realise the career I wanted, so if it is possible to take a year out and go on placement…definitely go for it!!! Also do make the most of all the help and support that QUB and the Careers Service provide!
