Before making your application

When completing online applications, students will no longer see subject specific courses but rather a series of generic course designations to be selected from e.g. MA in English will be simply be: MA (Master of Arts).

Available Loans

Postgraduate Loans are now available to help with the cost of studying a postgraduate course.

Funding for postgraduate loans is different if you are live in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Please click on the appropriate link below to see what funding is available to you and details on how to apply.

STUDENTS FROM NORTHERN IRELAND (and EU*)

For the academic year 2019/20, the Government can provide a tuition fee loan of up to £5,500 per student for postgraduate study. The postgraduate tuition fee loan will be available for the following postgraduate courses:

  • Postgraduate Master’s courses (taught or research)
  • Postgraduate Diplomas
  • Postgraduate Certificates
  • Top-up from a Postgraduate Certificate to a Postgraduate Diploma or a Master’s; or
  • Top-up from a Postgraduate Diploma to a Master’s

**Note: Students will only be eligible to take out one Postgraduate Tuition Fee Loan. Students will not be eligible for repeat funding, even where they do not complete the course, unless they have a compelling personal reason.

STUDENTS FROM ENGLAND (and EU*)

The Government may provide a loan of up to:

  • £10,906, if your course starts on or after 1 August 2019
  • £10,609, if your course started between 1 August 2018 and 31 July 2019

This Postgraduate Loan will be for Masters Study only.

Postgraduate Doctoral Loan

If you’re starting a doctoral degree, you could get a Postgraduate Doctoral Loan to help with course fees and living costs. You can get up to:

  • £25,700, if your course starts on or after 1 August 2019
  • £25,000, if your course starts before 1 August 2019

It is not based on your income or your family’s and it’s paid directly to you.

STUDENTS FROM WALES (and EU*)

From 1st August 2019 the Welsh Government will provide a combination of grant and loan of up to £17,000 per student* for postgraduate study.

The Postgraduate Loan will be for Masters Study only.

STUDENTS FROM SCOTLAND (and EU*)

Students ordinarily resident in Scotland may be eligible for postgraduate loans up to £10,000 for courses not available inside of Scotland.
