Queen's Academy

Junior Academy Programme

Approximately 90 pupils in Year 9 are nominated each year to participate in a programme that supports development from Year 9 through to Year 12. The Junior Academy aims to raise awareness of Higher Education and the opportunities available, by developing academic skills and supporting attainment.

In Year 9 participants are invited to attend a Welcome and Induction Event at Queen's, where they are given an insight into student life through a range of activities including the opportunity to meet current students and participate in a tour of the campus. When they progress to Year 10 the students are invited to take part in subject based taster days, hosted by the three Queen’s faculties during which academic staff and current students give pupils an insight to the different courses on offer at Queen’s. The taster days are designed to help Year 10 pupils select which GCSE subjects to choose with a view to potentially applying to university in the future.

In Years 11 and 12 pupils receive study skills support in preparation for their GCSEs. In Year 11, workshops focus on study skills such as exam preparation and time management, and in Year 12 participants are offered two masterclasses to help them prepare for their Maths and English GCSE exams. In Year 13, those who have completed the Junior Academy programme are welcome to apply to the Senior Academy.
