Queen's Academy Sports Programme

The Queen’s Academy Sports Programme is a progressive activity from Year 8 to Year 10. The programme aims to introduce young males to Higher Education though sport, enhancing their communication, leadership and team work skills.

In Year 8, nominated pupils take part in 3 days of activity introducing pupils to Queen’s University and Higher Education through sport. Sessions include familiarisation with Queen’s buildings including the McClay Library, lecture theatres and the Physical Education Centre. Participants also have the opportunity to work with current Queen’s students in a range of team challenges including Maths in sport, group presentations, and skills development sessions. Each year the programme is based around a sports related theme, with recent examples including the 2014 World Cup, American football, Euro 2016 and Rugby in 2017.

In Year 9 participants are invited back to Queen’s for a follow up programme that introduces other academic subjects thought sport. Workshops include nutrition, sports psychology, management and leadership. For example participants this year got a talk about the uses of technology in sport and measuring performance, and got the chance to use immersive 3D headsets to get a hands on feel of how this technology works. Participants are also given the opportunity to try a new sport, under professional coaches, making use of the excellent facilities and expertise on offer through Queen’s Sport and the PEC.

In Year 10 participants are offered the opportunity to complete a Level 1 Sports Leaders Award through Sports Leaders UK. The award provides a starting point for learners who wish to develop their leadership skills. It is a practical qualification in which learners must demonstrate their ability to lead others in sports and activities, which can help set the foundation for future sport development.
